IPL Photofacial in West Hills, CA

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photofacial Therapy

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy, also known as a photofacial, is a non-surgical way to improve the color and texture of your skin. It is highly effective at undoing visible damage caused by sun exposure (photoaging) and evening out your skin tone, helping you achieve a younger, more radiant complexion.

Unlike traditional lasers that use a single wavelength, an IPL device sends out multiple wavelengths of pulsating light. This allows us to target specific pigments in the skin and treat a wide range of skin conditions simultaneously without damaging surrounding tissue, ensuring a quick recovery.

What to know about IPL

Conditions That IPL Can Treat

IPL works best for individuals with pale or light brown skin. It is a highly versatile treatment used to lessen or eliminate:

  • Acne and acne scarring
  • Sun damage, age spots, and brown spots
  • Discolored skin and dark spots from hormonal changes
  • Freckles and birthmarks
  • Broken blood vessels and spider veins
  • Redness caused by Rosacea
  • Unwanted hair

How Effective Is It?

Your results will depend on the specific condition being treated:

  • Sun Damage: You may see up to a 70% reduction in brown spots and redness caused by UV rays.
  • Redness & Veins: After one to three treatments, most people see a 50% to 75% reduction in broken blood vessels. While treated veins do not return, new ones may form over time.
  • Rosacea: If your face flushes due to moderate to severe rosacea, IPL is an excellent alternative to laser therapy (especially for patients under 40).
  • Acne: IPL can reduce active acne and associated scarring, typically requiring about six sessions for noticeable differences.
  • Hair Removal: Most effective for light skin and dark hair; it may not be effective for very dark skin or blonde hair.

How to Prepare

To ensure the best results and protect your skin, please follow these guidelines before your appointment:

  • 4 Weeks Before: Avoid tanning in the sun, tanning beds, or using self-tanning creams.
  • 2 Weeks Before: Avoid waxing, chemical peels, or collagen injections.
  • Medications: Avoid aspirin or other blood-thinning drugs, as well as sun-sensitive medications (like the antibiotic doxycycline). Consult your doctor before stopping any prescriptions.
  • Day of Treatment: Arrive with clean skin. Do not use perfume, makeup, or scented products that could cause irritation.

During Your Treatment

A typical session lasts 20 to 30 minutes, though larger areas may take up to an hour. Your provider will apply a cooling gel to your skin and provide dark glasses to protect your eyes. As the handheld IPL device glides across your skin, you will feel light pulses. Most patients tolerate this well, often comparing the sensation to a rubber band snapping against the skin. If you are concerned about discomfort, we can apply a numbing cream 30 to 60 minutes before we begin.

Recovery and Aftercare

Because IPL is non-invasive, downtime is minimal, but your skin will need some gentle care:

  • The First Few Hours: Your skin may feel like it has a mild sunburn. Ice packs or a cool washcloth can provide relief.
  • The First Few Days: You may experience mild redness or bruising. Brown spots may temporarily darken before peeling off naturally.
  • Skincare Routine: Wash your face with a gentle cleanser for sensitive skin and apply moisturizing lotion. Avoid wearing makeup if your skin feels sore. You can generally return to your normal skincare routine 3 days post-treatment.
  • Sun Protection: Protect your healing skin with a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) containing a physical blocker like zinc. Reapply every 90 minutes, even on cloudy days.

Note: Most patients require a series of 3 to 7 sessions spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart to achieve optimal results. It may take several weeks to notice the full changes in your skin.

Is IPL Right for You?

While IPL is incredibly safe when performed by a trained technician, it is not for everyone.

You should avoid IPL if you:

  • Are pregnant
  • Are highly sensitive to light
  • Have very dark skin
  • Have recently tanned
  • Suffer from a skin resurfacing disorder or have severe scarring

Potential Risks & Side Effects:

Though rare, side effects can occur, including mild swelling, blistering, crusting, or temporary changes in skin color. IPL can also occasionally cause hormonal brown spots to flare up. Always contact your dermatologist if you experience severe pain, bleeding, signs of infection, or if you feel unwell after your treatment.
